I consider it to be punk for some artists and for some artists it is to close to alternative to tell if it is punk or not.

Personaly, I don't consider it punk. Emo is all about feelings and how your life sucks. Acual punk is about having a good time, drinker beer, and fighting against the man.

I know someone who said almost the exact same thing about emo punk. I guess I get pop punk and emo mixed up. Does punk4punks play to much emo?

I change my opinion about emo. You might not suck because you listen to emo but emo music, for the most part, sucks!
Update:
I posted under the wrong topic so what I said below is what I would have said before I posted this.

I still believe that putting down others for listening to a certain type of music or dressing a certain way is wrong. Mostly because you are limiting the freedom to pursue happiness. Even if your not in America this should be a basic human right to pursue happiness. Now that I have said that I recently purchased the warp tour 2005 comp discs and almost all of it was emo or screamo. I was pissed to say the least and anyone thinking of buying warp tour 2005 discs should seriously reconsider if you don't like emo or screamo. I also heard punk o rama 10 was just as bad but have not listened to it yet. I have come to the conclusion that emo is either overly formulaic or just plain crap. I have heard an occasinal good song from the genre but most of its crap. I would like to hear what others have got to say about emo. Is emo taking over punk? I hope not because I refuse to listen to that crap. I thought pop punk was getting bad but pop punk is a thousand times better than emo. I rather listen to older green day than listen to whiny singers singing how bad life is.

How about AFI?

Would you consider AFI punk, although some say AFI is indeed EMO?

I would definitly consider afi punk. They might have been one of the driving forces to keep punk alive and mainstream. Although I don't like the idea of punk being mainstream at all, afi did help instead of hurt punk unlike a lot of the emo bands have. This is the first that I have ever heard afi being emo. Maybe some of their songs are but the older stuff is pretty good.

Well, some people don't truely know what emo is, and will just look at a pic of the band and decide if they are emo or not. So, nowadays, if a punk band has jet black hair, or it goes into their eyes, people will say they are emo. Which is not always the case.

That is a good point. A person does need to judge by music first then appearence last. Most of the bands that I like, look completely different in person. For example AFI does look like a goth emo band but for the most part they do not sound like one.

EMO discussion

Who gives a crap what they LOOK LIKE! Punks can look any dam way they want.

Some punk bands have EMO genre defined tracks while the otherr tracks on the same disc are completely kick ass hardcore. If the drummer lost his girlfriend and wants to whine a little bit, there is nothing wrong with that. As long as they follow up with a "I hate Bush" track, it's all good by me and should be good with all the rest of you punk ass biatches.

Bands like Jimmy Eat World may cry a bit, but they are extremely talented musicians and tons of tracks on their CD's are incredible without the dam whine. Check out: "Sweetness" by them or "Cheating gets it faster". Both of those tracks kick ass even by a devoted hardcore fan's standards.

being talented musicians doesn't automatically make them a punk band...that is what this thread is about...but anyway, i think true emo bands are the ones that were around when it started like Rites Of Spring.

The crap you hear now-a-days is just manufactured hate...fake and stupid...angst in a can, its just not real. a good example is what afi became, they used to be a respectful band, but after watching their movie awards show...well, it was pretty damn sad to see them nose dive that bad. they might as well ask hot topic to design afi paper plates.

anyway...if anyone is interested in learning what emo really is check out this link

you will notice that any crap mtv lame ass bands wont be listed, im not trying to be high and mighty, but just trying to lend a hand, im tired of seeing this fake horrid bands putting out shit and calling it punk, it pisses me off.

Emo punk

I have got to say one thing that has been bothering me. Jimmy eat world is alternative and not punk. I don't even know how they could be considered punk. Sugar ray is more punk than Jimmy eat world and that is pretty sad. Also I am surprised that emo isn't necessarily popular bands whinning about how bad it is to be them. It just goes to show you once you think you know something about punk you find an underground movement changing the way punk is played. Thanks for the update on emo. I will check out more of the website when I get time.

Okay, for all those still debating whether or not Emo is punk, all I have to ask is: what is just straight "punk?" Punk, like any other genre of music, has many sub-categories, emo being one of them. It actually stands for emotional punk. It's just another genre, like skate-punk, hardcore-punk, 80's-punk, pop-punk, etc. Whether you like it or not, it is a sub-genre. What you have to ask yourself is not if you like it, but do you like this one particular band. It doesn't really matter how you categorize it. As for P4P and emo, I would say it is the discretion of Mr. Admin and his listener polls as to what should be played. You can't say no emo, that would get rid of many good "punk" bands. For example, I think I have heard some Alkaline Trio, which I would consider emo, and would be really disappointed if it were no longer on P4P just beacuse people don't want "emo" being played.

I definitly agree that saying punk is only this one type of music is limiting the genre. I love hard-core punk and to throw it in with metal because it doesn't sound like standard punk would be fucking stupid. The only reason I don't consider most popular emo, punk, is because it doesn't have the energy of standard punk, it is overly formulaic and doesn't present a "punk like" message. Some bands that are emo do occasionally put out good songs. If I put those songs on punk4punks it is probably because it has good energy and it is a good song. Although if any of my listeners do not like a song being played, please say so, so that I can take it out of the rotation. Unless of course I really like the song. Smile

I acualy like some emo bands. Like Emanuel, some of From First To Last and Silverstein. Lots of emo isn't punk for the reasons Admin said. But theres a song by Sex Pistols called "No Feelings". And emo is filled with alot of feelings. Think about that one.

I also like Emanuel and Silverstein. I am not sure about Silversteins new music but some of the old music is good to listen to. I wouldn't put Silverstein on my station because of the lack of energy in his music. Thanks for the posts.

Emo is definitely not punk. Emos are just a bunch of wannabes that wish they were punks or metalheads and they are pussies looking for attention. Punk music is about partying and having a good time, not being a little fucking bitch.
Guest

Heard the new Lagwagon album lately? Its about the loss of thier drummer to suicide. Its very emotional, they must be emo fucking pussies Confused

Wow, I think we need to take it back a notch and try not to sound to much like an elitist. You may hate the music just try not to hate the people(Unless they are an asshole) because they could always turn out to be normal punks in the future when emo becomes less popular.
