Re:I am definatly not a punk... I am just a geek with a love for sharing music.
To me "punk" is just a genre of music characterized by it's energy, rythim, and message (which is often: Fuck Authority). Perhaps that's just the kind of music that attracts those with enough balls to be different. (Mohawks, tats, piercings, Liberty spikes, leather jackets, etc)

punk to me is about saying FUCK YOU to society and what society tells you to do. i'm 28 and got into punk when i was 14. the riot grrrl movement was starting up and so was grunge. my dad was in the army and i grew up overseas in the middle of the middle east crisis in the 80s and desert storm in the 90s (you really see america's ass on an army base).
i always questioned everything and never fit in well with what society wanted me to do (have a boyfriend, play sports, etc). also i disagreed with beauty standards for women and beleived in challenging them. punk was a movement i identified with and felt comfortable with. i got out of the scene cuz i was trying to get off drugs and trying to figure out my place in our fucked up society and some peoples attitudes had pissed me off (gutter punks mooching, misogyny, punks saying other punks weren't punk enough because their patch wasn't cool or their boots were an off brand). i don't think i ever got out of it but i really got more deep in it when i started skating in roller derby.
punk for me, as a woman, has always been about saying FUCK YOU to what society says women should be like. my boyfriend is punk since jr high as well (he's 31), although we're more "post punk" now? whatever that means? like i still have pink/black hair and act crazy but not *as* crazy as when i was 16. we just believe in challenging the "norms" and not trusting authority for authority's sake.

Punk to me as a music is, like P4P Geek says energy. It also conveys a message that we are who we are and fuck you for trying to change us. Punk fashion has always been interesting to me and also a good way to challenge societies normal way of thinking. Punk to me is a way of standing up for the freedom to say and think what we want. Punk as a lifestyle and as a music creates a way to destroy societies norms and create better ones. I have never been into the fashion of punk(for the most part) but I have loved the music every since I have heard it. I have always hated fads no matter what they are but I love the message of punk and the energy in which it is conveyed.

I think your my new hero. And I'm totally not being a smartass. You rollerderby? That's flippin' awesome.
I guess I'm a total youngster.
Punk to me is standing up for myself and just doing what I do. I got my first taste of punk when I was 14 (99). I wore a lot of black, dyed my hair pinks, blue, green & everything in between. And ending up with more piercings than I knew what to do with.
I don't want to conform. Just simply be me. I'm not hardcore enough to get in the pit. But I will help clean up after the show.

To me punk is a life attitude. Back in highschool songs like "Straight A's" from the Dead Kennedys or "Mommy, can i go out and kill tonight?" from The Misfits, inspired me to have that punk attitude i felt that those songs were expressing all my thoughts (i've always been an honor roll student, or a nerd if you prefer that) with and incredible energy. I've never used a mohawk; i've never used piercings; i've never wore boots and when i used to go to punk concerts i was the only one wearing glasses and snickers. My point is you don't have to wear a uniform (mohawk, piercings, boots) to be a punk, punk is beyond that, punk is about questioning the authority, the morals, the values, everything that society tries to impose to you because "that's the way it is". Punk is about being an individual, living by your own rules, and saying: "It's my life and i'm the only one responsible for it".

The replyI listen to punk because look at who is president. I'm pissed at the fact that we have a pointless war, global warming (government claims it’s a hoax), and the rich are getting tax breaks so they can invest their money over seas; More jobs for Chinese children. They are many reasons to be pissed at the government today. And I want to take action even if it means over throwing the government to end all this bull shit that we are faced with. Most of the nation’s problems today is because of the government. So what I’m saying is that Punk to me is a way to wake up every one to the truth and take action to end this nightmare the government started and doesn't do any thing to end.

Punk to me means...Being punk can't be defined. To give it a definition would not be punk. Be yourself and don't follow anything. When you don't follow what others want you to follow, then you shall be truly punk.
Of course, you would not follow what I said either. In fact, there is no thing as truly punk, because a true punk would probably not ever learn how to read, walk, eat, sleep or anything, because all of that is conforming.

But if you dont conform, you'll be conforming to non conformists. lol. Punk is just doing whatever you want, when ever the hell you wanna do it. And just like, give a message to stop whats truely wrong in the world.

I couldnt agree with you more kitlo. Punk is doing what you want and fighting the machine. If you have to conform to do so then so be it. I also think that eating sleeping and learning is not conforming its a matter of survival and sometimes conforming is a means to the end. If I need to follow in with the nerd crowd to create my website and run punk4punks then that just what I need to do. Its when you act like a complete fucking sheep and follow every stupid trend that you might not be considered punk.
Thanks for the comments guys,

Yeah, if you get a good education, it won't only help you survive in this world, it can help you realise what is wrong with it too.

For me being a punk is making my own decisions about my life and choose to believe and do whatever i feel is right. I don't try to live with the system, i try to live in spite of it. sorry for my bad english

| jamiebear wrote: | | Punk is whatever the hell you want punk to be. In its own way.... Punk does not exist. | wow that is a different way of looking at it but I guess their is some truth to that. Such as punk being a fashion because punk isn't a fashion but a simple self expression in any way you want it to be. Punk is music and any type of conformity is just another uniform. So besides punk being a form of music its really nothing else than just being yourself.

Unfortunately... I belong to the Man. I'm in the Canadian navy.
Being a punk, for me, means more or less what the general ideal floated here is. I manage to piss people off all the time, whether it's from my amazing intake of beer to my sometimes indecipherable accent, to my absolute refusal to play precisely by their rules. If I wear a lumberjack hat while performing my duties in an exemplary fashion... it drives them nuts. =D I'm proud to say that I once bleached my hair and they couldn't do a thing about it, and some time after that I grew it to the absolute maximum allowable and had it vertical... drove 'em nuts, those buzz-headed numpties. =D Yes, it may seem minor but that's a Big Deal for us. I push my limits as I can.
I belong to the Man, but they can't ever mold me into their ideal. =)

Hehe, good deal. I am glad to see you floating away from the norm. Too many people think that they have to get married, have kids, live in suburbia and be productive members of society to have a happy life. Sad thing is that they can be just as miserable if not more miserable then us. Breaking from the norm is a good way of having people question those values and hopefully return to reality. Not that their is anything wrong with having kids and living in suburbia and etc...but it is when you expect yourself to be happy that you have truly given up.

Heh, I'm getting married and having kids because I met a fantastic woman and want to have kids with her. =D It's a sort of strange compulsion to procreate and see what kind of gleefully individualistic terrors we can raise and unleash upon society. We're quite looking forward to it.

I dont know what i am, but i like the punk music and most of the lyrics. What i like about punk is that they dont beleive in anything the politicians says. I mean its like the opposite of conformist. I guess you can say punk * -1 = conformist lol.
And the energy in punk. Many ppl would say oh yes we have to do something about this, but then they think other ppl will do something about it, and then nothing will happen because no one will do anything.
Punk is like, oh yes we will do something about it, and then there will be taken action.
I dont dress punk-like, thats just not me, and i could never harm someone randomly just for the sake of amusement. However, if someone should harm me without a reason i would definately harm him back with twice the force.
What do you think about drugs? are punk and drugs related or is it just a coincidence in some cases?
